John Durward "JD" married Nancy Harbison on Nov 20, 1920. Their first child, Dwynell Burns, was born and died from pneumonia while the family lived in Akron. Two sons were born shortly thereafter, Merrill Durward Burns and Ellis Cortez Burns. A daughter, Viva Nell Burns, was born after the family returned to the Wheat community in Cullman County. After Nancy's death, Durward married Elizabeth Thompson. Durward loved gospel music, coon dogs and beagle hounds.
Durward was a farmer, rubber worker for a couple of years, and then a security officer for T.C.I. in Birmingham. He retired to a cattle farm on Smith Lake in SW Cullman County. He was a leader in gospel music.
