Cleon Alvin (Mac) McAlister, 87, of Clarkston, went to be with his Lord, Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at his son's home in Clarkston.

He will always be remembered for his sense of humor and for the way he cared for others. Mac was very tender-hearted, quick to help those in need, and was known for his strong Christian principles.

Mac was born June 16, 1915, in Roseburg, Ore., to Elium and Hazel Swank McAlister. The family lived in various places in Washington, Idaho and Montana.

While working on a harvest crew near Kahlotus, Wash., Mac met Esther Rennick, who was cooking for the workers. He liked her cooking so well that they were married a year later, Sept. 11, 1939, and were married almost 63 years.

They began their married life on a farm near Valley, Wash., and supplemented their income by working in the Magnesite Quarry. Later they moved to a ranch near Kennewick. In 1946, they moved to a farm on Gold Hill near Kendrick. While there, he drove a school bus and was loved by the students. In 1967, they moved to Kahlotus and he was employed by the Kahlotus School District as transportation supervisor until his retirement in 1979.

After retirement, Mac and Esther spent 10 winters "snowbirding" in Arizona. Due to failing health, they moved to Clarkston in 1997 to be near their son, Gary.

Mac and Esther were active members at the United Brethren Church at Gold Hill, the Church of the Nazarene at Connell, Wash., and the SonRise Baptist Church in Clarkston. He was on the board, served as Sunday school superintendent and had many other responsibilities in the churches. He was very supportive of missions, including the work of his son, Dale, and his family with New Tribes Mission.

Survivors include his wife, Esther; a son, Gary and his wife, Nancy; a daughter, Shirley and her husband, Alton; a son, Dale and his wife, Barbara; 20 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. Mac was a good husband, father and grandfather to each of them.

Also surviving are two sisters, Viola and Eldora.

A sister preceded him in death.
