Ruth Gay passed away with her family by her side Tuesday morning, March 22, 2005, at Clarkston Care Center of causes related to age.

Ruth was born in Mooreland, Okla., on March 14, 1916, to Will McDowell and Pauline (Sammer) McDowell. She was raised in Oklahoma and Kansas before moving to Eugene, Ore., in 1936, where she met and married Howard Gay.

They moved to Asotin in 1940, and later she and Howard owned and operated Gay's Grocery in Asotin. After the store closed, she went to work for Clarkston Care Center until her retirement.

She enjoyed sewing for her family and was an avid gardener. She was also a lifetime member of the Nitosa OES.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband in 1965, and a brother, Lester, who was killed in World War II.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Vineland Cemetery. Pastor Elmer Davis will officiate.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Northern Idaho Chapter, P.O. Box 1294, Coeur d'Alene, ID 83816-1294, or to a charity of your choice.
