Lester Lloyd Eckman passed away Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston of pneumonia.

He was born May 1, 1915, to Lloyd B. Eckman and Artie Bell (Clark) Eckman in Juliaetta.

He attended Juliaetta and Genesee schools through the eighth grade.

He joined the Navy in the fall of 1943. After two years in European and Pacific theaters, he was discharged in November 1945. During his stay in the military, he participated in the Normandy invasion and was in Japan. He was discharged as an engineering petty officer.

Lester married Betty Rose Mickelson on Nov. 24, 1939, in Yakima. The couple settled in the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley. They lived in Clarkston for 60 years.

Lester began his career with Potlatch Forest Inc. in August 1940 as a lumber puller in the planing mill in Lewiston. He was trained as a lumber grader in 1942 and continued in that capacity until entering the Navy in the fall of 1943.

He returned to Potlatch as a lumber grader and was promoted to check grader in 1948. Four years later, he was named general foreman of the shipping department and was promoted to shipping superintendent in 1962, the position he held until being named general production superintendent. He retired in 1979.

He was a lifetime member of the Clarkston Methodist Church. He served on the board of trustees for a number of years. He was also a member of the Lewis-Clark Hoo-Hoo Club, president of the Lumberman's Club from 1966 to 1967, Clarkston Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rites Bodies, Calam Temple of the Shrine, order of the Eastern Star, and the Lewiston Elks Lodge.

Lester is survived by his wife, Betty Rose Eckman of Lewiston; a brother, Leonard Lee Eckman of Orofino; a sister, Linda Horning of Deary; and a nephew, Larry Eckman of Connell, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Lawrence Eckman; and a nephew, Ray Eckman.

The family asks that memorial contributions be made to a charity of choice.
