Rexford E. Abbott, 61, a painting contractor, died Friday at Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane of cancer. He had been ill for the past month.

Abbott was born July 4, 1926, to Jack and Eula Abbott at Clarkston.

He graduated from Clarkston High School and served two years in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was a Spokane police officer following the service and later worked for the Lewiston Fire Department and the Job Corps, then directed by the Asotin County Housing Authority.

He was married to Joan Stringfellow Nov. 8, 1974, at Pullman.

At his death, he was a semi-retired painting contractor.

He was an avid fisherman, active with the Asotin County democrats, Lions Club, Camp Fire, and a member of the Faith Tabernacle Church.

Survivors include his wife, Joan, at Clarkston; sons, Steve and Kirk, both of Spokane; a daughter, Shelly Knox of Spokane; two step-daughters, Vicki Winger of Vista, Calif., and Pam McKeehan of Clarkston; two step-sons, Mike Isbell of Mulino, Ore.; and Russell Dial in Germany; four grandchildren and nine step-grandchildren.
