HATTERAS - Fred B. Austin, Jr. died August 14 at Albemarle Hospital. Born July 1, 1915, he was the son of the late Fred B. Austin, Sr. and Ruth Styron Austin.

He is survived by his wife, Irma Midgett Austin; a son, Fred Barry Austin, III and wife Sarah of Hatteras; a daughter, Cora A. Simmons and husband Arnold Simmons, Sr. of Frisco; three grandsons: Anthony Simmons of Greenville, Kerry Simmons of Nag Head and Kevin Simmons and wife Monique of Williamsburg, Va.; five great-grandchildren: Wayne Simmons, Clay and Cory Simmons, Daniel and Jennifer Simmons; three sisters: Virginia Coke of Norfolk, Velma Gaskins of Wilmington, and Jesslyn Walton of Jacksonville; and three step-grandchildren: Inez and Melinda Tolson of Buxton and Bull Tolson of Manteo.

He was predeceased by a grandson, Arnold Simmons, Jr., and a sister, Eliza Robinson, and a brother, Charley Austin.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, Aug. 16 at 2 p.m. in the Hatteras United Methodist Church by the Rev. Holt Clarke with burial in the Hatteras Island Community Cemetery. Twiford's Island Chapel in Hatteras is handling arrangements.
