The Galveston Daily News, Galveston, Tex. 12-22-1883:
OBITUARY.
Mrs. Jane P. Hennessy, mother of P. H. and M. P. Hennessy, died at the residence of her daughter, on avenue I, between Tremont and Twenty-fourth, yesterday forenoon. The deceased lived to a good old age, and died with all her living children, six in number, surrounding her bedside. She was born in the town of Ballylanders, Limerick county, Ireland, on February 14, 1814, and consequently would have been seventy years old had she lived until the 14th of February next. With her husband and family she emigrated to this county in 1849, and first settled in Connecticut, but moved to Texas in 1851. The family first resided in Houston, but subsequently moved to this city, and for the last six years the deceased resided with members of her family here. Mrs. Hennessy was the mother of fourteen children, six of whom, two sons and four daughter, survive her. Her husband died in 1853, leaving her with a large family: but with the love and tenderness of a true mother and an honest woman, she went to work to keep her family together and bring them up according to the dictates of her own heart. How well she succeeded, and how well her efforts were appreciated by her children, could be gleaned from the sorrowing faces of the latter, yesterday, as they bent over the lifeless form of their beloved parent. The deceased sprung from a sturdy Irish stock. Her father and people, as well as her husband, belonged to the better class of farmers in their native country, and to her dying day she revered the memory of her youthful home. She was a thorough Irishwoman, in passion, susceptibilities and temperament. Tender and generous to all with whom she came in contact, she still was possessed of a strength of character that only deserted her as the spirit of life departed. She was a true Christian, a devoted Catholic and died with the blessings of her church to soothe her last moments. For two years she had been an invalid, and death really was a blessing sent to relieve her of her burdens. The remains will be taken from the residence of her daughter, on avenue I, between Tremont and Twenty-fourth streets, at 9 o'clock this morning and conveyed to the depot, when they will be transferred to Houston for interment. A special train has been chartered on the Santa Fe road to convey the friends of the family wishing to attend the funeral, to Houston and return. Funeral services will be conducted at the church in Houston, and the remains will be interred in the Catholic cemetery.
