OBITUARY :
DAVID ADAMS, No. 113 East North street, died, Thursday night at 9:30 o'clock, in his 80th year. Two weeks ago he suffered a slight stroke of paralysis and had gradually grown weaker. He was the town's oldest coachmaker, having learned the trade about 60 years ago and worked at it until last spring.
He was also one of the town's oldest citizens and a veteran of the civil war.
Mr. Adams was born at Ashland mills, west of town, and was the youngest son of David Adams, who owned and operated the mills for a number of years. While a boy, his father purchased the farm now owned by the Misses Brown, north of town, and on this place he was married. He attended the country school and at the age of twenty entered upon his trade in Alex. Hamilton's coach shop, North Church street. About 1860 he started in the coach making business for himself at the corner of North and Church streets. In 1864 he entered the army and served nine months in Co. F, 19th Pa. Regt., under Capt. Wilders.
When he returned from the war he engaged with his brother, Jacob Adams, in the coach making business, at the corner of Second and Church streets, which association continued until the death of his brother thirteen years ago. He then began work in W. T. Haugh's shop, East Main street, where he was employed last spring.
He was married to Nancy McCune, Mercersburg, fifty-six years ago on last Wednesday. Mr. Adams was a consistent member of the Methodist church.
Surviving is one daughter, Mrs. Idus Rider, East North street. Mr. Adams was the last of a family of six, as follows, Jacob Adams, Abram Adams, Mrs. David Hoeflich, Mrs. Jacob Rowe, Waynesboro, and Mrs. Cornelius Lauderbaugh, Mercersburg.
Funeral services at house, Sunday 1 p.m., conducted by Rev. O. G. Heck. Interment in Burns Hill cemetery.
