March 4, 1879 – November 6, 1962

Dallas - A symbol of the Old West died here Tuesday with the passing Henry Campbell Modrell of Willamina, former Kansas City marshal, a rider in Buffalo Bill's wild west shows, a member of Montana State Militia and Santa Fe Railroad engineer. He was 83.

Modrell died Tuesday in a Dallas nursing home which he had entered the day before his death. It had been discovered in July that he was suffering from leukemia.

He was known to his friends as "Buff" or "Bill" because of his tours with Buffalo Bill Cody's famous circus shows of a half century ago. Born at Mulvane, Kansas he was marshal at Kansas City, Kansas before moving to Montana where he and Nellie Oeleis were married in 1917 at Great Falls, Montana.

Modrell moved to this area from Caldwell, Idaho in 1942. He was employed in rural areas of Mapleton, Valsetz, Hoskins and Black Rock as an operator of steam engines. He retired about 9 years ago. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He leaves one son, Henry Frost Modrell, Wren, three daughters, Mrs. Harold Perkins and Mrs. Roy Brown both of Willamina, and one sister Mrs. Minnie Shelton, Walla Walla, Washington; 17 grand children, 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m., Saturday in Friesen Mortuary, Pastor Zara Potter of Willamina, First Christian Church officiating.

Interment will be in Dallas Cemetery.
