John Robert Monroe Gates was a very prolific and prominent citizen of Ferry Pass. By the time he had married Susan Andrews Jameson at age 24 he was a Timber Inspector for the Ferry Pass Shippers Assoc. By the year 1920 he owned extensive land where the Ellyson (Ellison)Field Industrial Park is located now, it was a early Naval Training facility. By the time he was elected to the Florida Legislature in 1918 he had owned and operated a saw mill on his property on Old Roberts road. He owned and operated a Ferry named Freshwater across the bay to Floridatown with Walker Clark as it's captain. He owned a store in Ferry Pass where elections were held, he was the clerk of elections. He was elected as a County Commissioner in 1921 and resigned late 1922 to become the county's first Road Supervisor. He was running for the office of Justice of Peace at the time of his death in 1934.
