The Sandersville Progress Sandersville, Georgia 22 Feb. 1928
Injuries Fatal to W. O. Donovan
Vidalia, Ga., Feb. 20 - A telephone message Sunday night to relatives in this city told of a tragic automobile accident near Ocala, Fla., which resulted in the death of W. O. Donovan, a well known former resident of this city.
Mr. and Mrs. Donovan and their son and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. George Donovan, were returning from Daytona, Fla., where they had spent the day. They had stopped on the side of the road, where the son was in the act of fixing a punctured tire, when a passing motorist crashed into the car, knocking the elder Mr. Donovan from the car to the pavement, causing his head to be crushed. No other member of the party was injured.
Mr. Donovan was rushed to an Ocala hospital where he underwent an operation today at 12 o'clock but never regained consciousness.
He was the son of the late W. O. Donovan, Wadley, Ga., having moved here over 20 years ago where he was engaged in the sawmill business, known as the Garbutt-Donovan Lumber company, for a number of years.
Mr. Donovan gave the present site to the county for the courthouse and he was awarded the contract for building the present courthouse. He was president of the First National bank of this city from the time of its organization until he moved to Micanopy, Fla., about three years ago where he engaged in the lumber business on an extensive scale, being president of the Donovan, Chapman and Warthen Lumber company there.
Mr. Donovan married Miss Mary Wicker of Sandersville, Ga., had one son, George Donovan, Micanopy, Fla., and two daughters, Mrs. W. A. Chapman, Micanopy, Fla., and Mrs. J. B. Warthen, Vidalia. Two sisters, Mrs. William Owens and Mrs. Claude Shewmake, both of Atlanta.
While here, Mr. Donovan was prominent in church and civic organizations of this city, being a member of the Methodist church. He was an extensive real estate owner here, owning a large amount of business property and several large farms. His son and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Warthen, left immediately upon the message that he had been injured.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later but it is thought that he will be returned to this city for burial.
