Mr. Arthur M. Joens Sr., 76, of Michigan City, died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2006, at 1:40 a.m. at Porter Hospital, Portage.
He was born Aug. 8, 1930, in Harvey, Ill., to Arthur P. and Emma (Gatrell) Joens.
Mr. Joens retired as a plumber for Plumbers Union 210 and also retired as plumbing inspector for the city of Michigan City in 2004. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Otis, and a former usher at the church. He was a member of Coolspring Democratic Club and St. Joseph Young Men's Society and a lifetime member of Westville American Legion Post 21. He was an avid Notre Dame football fan who held season tickets for more than 50 years. He loved his grandchildren and dogs. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.
On Feb. 4, 1967, in Otis, he married Josephine Firanek, who survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Kathy (Dr. Jeff) Anderson and Diane (Kevin) Warnke, both of LaPorte; one son, Arthur Jr. of Michigan City; six grandchildren, Melissa and Phillip White, Lauren and Kristin Anderson, Abigail Joens and Kyle Warnke; and one sister, Ellen Napier of Colorado Springs, Colo.
His parents and one sister, Loretta Peters, preceded him in death.
A funeral Mass will be Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Otis, with Rev. Gerald Schweitzer officiating. Friends may call at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Michigan City, Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m., with St. Joseph Young Mens Society reciting the rosary at 5:30 p.m.; and Monday from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Otis, with full military services.
