John Wesley Bower was born in Linwood, Leavenworth, Kansas to Joseph & Rosa Knerr Bower. John lived in Linwood until age 19 when he came to Craig area. He worked in the timber and on ranches. In 1915 he homesteaded north of Hayden & for a number of years he ran a threshing machine through Routt County. He retired in 1956 & moved to Craig. Brothers Robert, Fred, & Frank also left Linwood and moved to the Craig area. His father Joseph also moved to the Craig area for a few years later returning to Kansas to the Old Soldiers Home. 4 brothers went west to Avon, Idaho: Sam, William, Charles, & Joe.
John died at his home on North Washington Street Monday, May 21st following lingering bad health. Funeral services were conducted by L. R. Shuler at the Zobel Mortuary Chapel. Interment was in the Fairview Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Bud Bower, Bill Bower, Dick Douglas & Commie Hultz. Honorary pallbearers were: Ferg Ferguson, Jeff Breshears, Stanley Preece, Philipp Gerini & Art Fitzpatrick. Survivors are one brother Frank of Craig & a host of nephews& nieces of Craig & in Idaho.
