Captured & held as prisoner of war at Andersonville prison. Survived & exchanged April 1865.
Born in Selzach, Solothurn, Switzerland. At age 6 he immigrated with his parents to America where the family settled in Reading, Pennsylvania. Joseph and his brothers all enlisted in the Civil War. All brothers survived the war with Joseph being the only brother who was captured and held prisoner. He was held one year at Andersonville Prison until released in April of 1865. After released, he returned to Reading. Shortly after his return he married Rosa Knerr. While at Reading one of his jobs was a hatter at Mohus Hat factory. In 1879 Joseph & his family moved west. They settled in Linwood Kansas. Rosa, Joseph's wife died with birth of their last child. Joseph remained in Linwood until older age. He decided to join his son's who had moved to the Craig, Colorado area. He remained in Colorado until he became sick. He then returned to Kansas and entered the Old Soldier's Home in Leavenworth, dying shortly after.
