William Landry Wale was born on February 20, 1817 in Alexandria, Louisiana. Following the death of his father, his mother sent him away to France to become a priest. However, he decided to become a druggist instead. In 1884 he was working at the Eagle Drug Store and later, the Phoenix Drug Store, across the street from the Town Hall in Alexandria. William or 'Billy' worked as a druggist for over 50 years before retirement in March of 1884. While working, William was often referred to as "the old reliable druggist... " and "Uncle Billy". Over the years he assembled an odd collection of birds and eggs preserved in alcohol for public viewing at the drug store. William married Mary Louise Lemelle and lived on a farm near Lamourie, close to Alexandria. Together, William and Mary had six children in 11 years. Mary died in 1884 at the age of 57. William retired from the Phoenix Drug Store in 1889 at the age of 72. William retuned to work the following year. He died 10 years later on December 18, 1899, having lived a long life of 82 years. A notice of his death described William as a quiet, peaceable citizen and a good druggist. William and Mary were burried at the Wale Cemetery in Woodworth, south of Alexandria.
