The following is an excerpt from "A History of West Point" by Paul Welch: "1897 was a tragic year for the 15th. District. May 13th., about 2:30 P.M., the dump at Wright's Mines located at Pinkney fell, killing James Crow and his son Matthew, a boy of 16,...Richard Hartwick, a 16 year old boy, etc..." This iron mine was located near West Point, Tennessee. Thirteen men were killed that day and many more injured. Three of the dead were only sixteen years old; Matt Crow, Richard Hardwick and Dona Brown. One of the injured men, Will Kilpatrick, died from his injuries around 1900.
