Son of William H. and Elizabeth "Betsey" (FISHER) VanDerCook. Grandson of Revolutionary War veteran, Isaac VanDerCook and his wife, Sarah TEACHOUT. This Isaac was married to Abigail HAYES, widow of Chauncey D. Fisher on 1 January, 1836 at Kensington, Oakland Co., MI, "by Pearly W. G. Gates, JP". Abigail had three daughters, Cornelia, Esther and Sarah Fisher, by her first husband. Isaac appears to have at least informally adopted them, as they used the VanDerCook surname. Isaac and Abigail had six children of their own. All but the eldest were born at Cohoctah Twp., Livingston Co., MI. They were: William H. VanDerCook, Lyman Hayes VanDerCook, Chauncey Lorenzo VanDerCook, Alfred Fernando VanDerCook, Margaret E. VanDerCook (dy) and Albert J. VanDerCook (dy).
