Doctor and Civil War veteran. He was the youngest of three sons of George W. McCook & Mary McCormick; his brothers were George (1795-1873) and Daniel, Sr. (1798-1863). He attended medical school at Pennsylvania's Jefferson College, completed additional studies in Cincinnati, and became a physician in New Lisbon, Ohio. His brothers also moved to Ohio, where John and Daniel became patriarchs of the Ohio family known as "The Fighting McCooks." Five sons of John James McCook, his father, eight nephews, a brother and two other relatives were Union Army soldiers, sailors, chaplains, or doctors. Dr. McCook served as a volunteer surgeon at the start of the Civil War. He died soon after the war's end while in Washington, DC to visit his son, General Anson G. McCook.
