Plans for Repairing and Remodeling St. John the Baptist Church Announced
Plans for repairing and remodeling Saint John the Baptist church in Many are under way, it was announced by the Rev. Father M. R. Gremillion, pastor.
Although built in 1925 under the supervision of Father Quirinus Vanderburg and dedicated March 17 of that year by the Most Reverend Cornelius Van de Ven, Bishop of Alexandria, Saint John's begins to show danger signs: the roof leaks and water seeps through the walls in several places, Father Gremillion reported.
The church repair committee consisting of Floyd Lopez, general chairman; Pat Gandy, secretary; Joe Bill McCormick, J. L. Hunker, J. B. Vandegaer, J. J. Blake, Marvin Adams, Joseph Grappe, Yulee Koss, P. F. DeKeyser, Lee Solice, E. A. Dupree, Mrs. John Mowad, Mrs. J. W. Gandy, and Mrs. W. R. Robinson, met with Father M. R. Gremillion, Monday evening, Jan. 7 to study and discuss the plans submitted by architect J. Gilbert Buvens of Baton Rouge, whose forefather was one of the five "John Baptists" who organized the Many congregation back in the early 1860's.
Besides waterproofing the exterior and refinishing the interior, the major alteration will be moving the Baptistery into the tower on the west side, and opening a main entrance in the south wall, leading to a spacious patio, thence down a few steps to a large parking area. His excellency, Bishop C. P. Greco, has enthusiastically approved the plans and was fascinated by the Spanish Mission decoration of the tower and facade.
It is hoped that the project will be completed and ready for re-dedication Dec. 8 for the celebration of Father Gremillion's Silver Sacerdotal Jubilee.
