The US Navy was building an inland Navy base at Farragutt, Idaho that couldn't be reached by planes and weapons from the sea.
Attended Adult Farm classes after USA service. Discharge certificate says he was interested in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration.
Spent a season in the Kansas wheat harvest after service(?) Told me about plowing with a big tractor with steel wheels, said when he got to the center of the fields and the wildlife cover ran out, the pheasants and jack rabbits were everywhere.

Lifelong Oregon County Missouri resident and lifelong Oregon County Missouri DEMOCRAT and proud of both.

Attended Billmore School #57 and Couch High School. Worked at the Thayer Milling Company when he was 16 years old,worked at Eder's DX Station 1948--,owned and operated a station with his brother JC in 1955 on Front Street,Thayer. (Lindley's)
Licensed Feeder Pig dealer in Iowa for many years. 1973 to 1986 9 million dollars in feeder pig sales, averaged shipping 18,000 pigs per year. 1954 market article in The Thayer News , bought the top selling pigs. Also bought and filled orders for thin sows and feeder cattle at times. Travelled many ,many trips and miles buying country feeder pigs and other livestock in his early trading years, Missouri Bootheel, Puxico, Poplar Bluff, Marshall, Arkansas, Strawberry, Arkansas and as far south as Mississippi.
Most of the feeder pig orders were filled at Central Ozark ,West Plains, Mo. Alton Sale, Alton, Mo. Sho Me Feeder Pigs, Inc, Thayer and Ava, MFA Tele-auctions, Alton, Cabool, Doniphan, Imboden, Arkansas. Mtn Home Auction, Marshall Auction, Pocahontas Auction. Darrell was Ringman at the Mountain Grove Feeder Pig Auction in 1972-74.

Lived in Thayer and outside the city limit from 1947-1959 when their home burned on Carpenter's Road in 1959 (Scott Reef home in 2014-2023),bought 305 acres west of Thayer,March 7,1957,raised cattle and backgrounded calves, hogs. FmHA all electric home in 1959-62, built the 16 x 64 hog barn in 1977 and kept 30 day feeder pigs. Built the 16 x 48 cow barn right before the failed Iran hostage raid.

Hauled persimmon poles for the telephone lines with the 1950 International 2 ton truck. Around 1959-1965. Ran a blackberry buying route one season. Bought a new 1966 Chevrolet pickup truck for $1800( Blackburn's ?) ,new 1972 GMC pickup for $2750 ( $2912 sticker) (Brewer GMC) , new 1978 Chevrolet 3/4 ton for $4850 (Blackburn's Thayer) ,1977 Ford LTD $5150 (Freeman Ford Mammoth Spring) ,new 1970 GMC 2 ton chassis $4250, Brewer Auto & GMC Sales.
Sold,bought,and hauled feeder pigs to north Missouri and mostly Iowa,back hauled corn, brought some of the first fescue seed in this area on the trip back. Brought 20- 16 foot hog panels back one trip, these were some of the very first hog panels in this area, brought a good Polled Hereford bull back from the Kansas City area for Paul Caldwell on the same load as the hog panels.
