Merkel Parents Get Purple Heart
MERKEL, Oct. 20--(Spl) -- Mr. and Mrs. Henry Henington have received the Purple Heart, awarded posthumously to their son, Pfc. Henry F. Henington Jr. The citation read: "For military merit and wounds received in action, resulting in his death, July 24, 1944."
Mr. and Mrs. Henington are in receipt of a letter from Pfc. Isaac F. Martin, a very close "buddy" of H. F. He said censorship would not permit details but he did say there was a funeral service with full military honors and that he is looking forward to a visit with the family on his return to the states. His home is Springfield, Mo.
A letter also was received from H. F.'s lieutenant. He gave the exact location of burial in Army, Navy and Marine cemetery 2, on Guam Island.

MERKEL, April 3, (RNS) – Memorial service for Pfc. H. F. Henington, U. S. Marine Corps, who was killed July 24, 1944, in the service of his country at Guam, will be held from the chapel of the Barrow-Sheppard Funeral home, at 3 p.m. Wednesday. The Rev. R. L. Butler, Pastor of the Methodist Church, will hold the service, with military burial in Rose Hill Cemetery in charge of Merkel Post 5683, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
The body, which was brought from the Pacific aboard the U. S. Army Transport Walter Schwenk, landing in San Francisco, Calif., on March 22, will arrive here from Fort Worth on the Texas & Pacific westbound Sunshine Special at 8:09 p.m. Tuesday, with a military escort.
Private First Class Henington, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. F. Henington, of Noodle, was graduated from Merkel High School in midterm of 1942-43 and attended Texas Technological College at Lubbock for the last semester that year. At the time of his induction, shortly after he became 18, on Sept. 12, 1943, he was working on the ranch of his uncle, T. E. Parmer, near Cisco. Before going overseas in January following, he trained at Camp Elliott, San Diego, Calif.
Three months after his death, his parents received the Purple Heart, awarded posthumously to their son. The citation read: "For military merit and wounds received in action, resulting in his death, July 24, 1944." Three stars on the award indicated three major battles.
Surviving are the parents, and three sisters, Mrs. Bill Harris, Merkel, Mrs. Hilbert Zellars, Odessa, and Mrs. U. L. Kingsbury, Paducah.
