Anchorage resident Helen Ann Kipke, 80, died Oct. 26, 2003, at Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage. Visitation was at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, 737 E St. A memorial service was held at Providence Alaska Medical Center auditorium, with burial at Angelus Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Kipke was born April 10, 1923, in Foley, Minn., where she was raised. Her son wrote: "She could tell you stories of old-school farm living, horse-and-buggy days long past. She married Maurice Kipke in December 1950, and he drove his new bride up the Alcan Highway to Alaska in January 1951. "Helen worked briefly at the Post Exchange at Fort Richardson. Maurice and Helen built their home in 1952. She became a full-time homemaker and mother in 1955 with the birth of their son, Carl. "She was so proud of her home and flower gardening; she had such beautiful landscaped yards. Helen was such a good sport and thoroughly enjoyed the true outdoor experiences of Alaska. As recently as last year, she skied, snowshoed, snowmobiled, bicycled, hiked and explored Alaska. Many wonderful years were spent at the family cabin in Willow. "She lovingly and faithfully cared for her husband of 35 years until his passing in 1986. For the past 16 years, Helen volunteered at Providence Alaska Medical Center. With her task orientation and goal-minded work ethic, she accomplished a total of 27,886 volunteer hours, which is the highest number of hours for any individual at Providence. "Helen did not start volunteering for recognition but nevertheless took pride in her accomplishments and awards. Memories of her will surely warm many hearts, which she touched through her devoted service. "Other interests include reading, writing newsy, lengthy family letters, cooking and baking delicious meals and treats, caring for her lilacs and playing with her son's dogs."

Mrs. Kipke is survived by her son, Carl of Anchorage; brothers, Joe Strait and Frank Strait; sister, Bertha Alstrom; and many nephews and nieces, all of Minnesota. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Providence Alaska Foundation, P.O. Box 196604, Anchorage 99519.
