Joseph T. Kalcevic, at the age of 94, met his birthday into eternity in his home under the loving care of his family and wonderful caregivers on March 1, 2008. Joe was born to two Yugoslavian immigrants, Henry and Mary Kalcevic on June 12, 1913 and began an almost 90-year career of working the family farm, beginning by helping his brother, Frank, herd cattle at an early age. Joe entered elementary school as a non- English-speaking student and he continued in school until the eighth grade. In 1941, Joe married Ruth (Whiting), and together, they raised four children in the Eastlake area, where he farmed and volunteered with the Fire Department. Joe and Ruth divorced in 1959, and he later married Kathryn Greigo. In 1952, the farm was moved to the Bennett area and now extends well out onto the eastern plain. Joe was an innovative thinker and was successful in wheat farming but also in hogs and cattle. Throughout his lifetime, he and his brothers worked together as a family to build the successful farming operation that Kalcevic Farms is today. Joe loved farming and until recently held a leadership position in Kalcevic Farms Inc. This legacy will be carried on by his son, Joe H. Kalcevic, and grandsons, as well as nephews, John and Jim Kalcevic, and their sons. Joe is survived by three children, Joanne (George) Slanger, Karen Baird and Joe (Carrie) Kalcevic, a step-son, 9 grandchildren, a step- granddaughter, and 19 great-grand- children. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn, his daughter, Arlene, parents Henry and Mary, and siblings John, Frank, Mary and Ann, and a step-granddaughter. Visitation, Wednesday, 1-4pm, Horan and McConaty Family Chapel, 3020 Federal Blvd. The Rosary will be held Wednesday, 7:00 PM and the Funeral Mass Thursday, 10:30 AM, both at Our Lady of the Plains Catholic Church in Byers. Interment, Bennett Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Our Lady of The Plains Catholic Church, 186 North McDonnell Street, Byers, CO 80103.
