The following is an excerpt from "Celebration of Life for Matthew T. Webb" which was held on June 14, 2008 at Lakeview High School, Lakeview, Lake County, Oregon:

Matt and his family lived in Arizona, Washington and finally in Lakeview, Oregon where he graduated in 1984. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology from Weber State College in Odgen, Utah.

He fought his first fire at the age of 14 while on a YCC Crew. All through college, Matt spent summers fighting fire in Lakeview, first for the Oregon State Forestry, then the Lakeview Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Matt spent many years as the Helitack and Station Foreman at Fort Rock Guard Station. He was happiest during those years, when the rotor blades were roaring over him, and he and his crew were heading to a fire.

Matt's drive and passion for wildfire management allowed him to become the Fire Management Officer for the Fremont/Winema National Forests and the Lakeview BLM. Matt's love for community of Lake County kept thim striving to stay in Lakeview for almost all of his career, with the exception of the year in Klamath Falls as Deputy Fire Staff. Matt had the highest regard for the Lake County ranching community, and recognized the important of the successful relationship between ranchers and the wilfire community. Responsible for 6 million acres, the safety of his firefighters was always paramount. Matt was recognized by the Pacific Northwest Wildland Fire and Aviation Community with the coveted "Silver Pulaski" Award.

Serving Lakeview as a Intermediate EMT was an equally strong passion for Matt. He logged over 2000 runs over 15 years. His reassuring smile and compassion made the difference for many patients. He felt a special camaraderie with the Lakeview Disaster Unit members.

It was an honor for Matt to serve on the Lake County School Board from 2001-2005. There were many autumn Friday nights when Matt watched over the Honker Football team with his fellow ambulance crew.

Matt also served from 1997-2000 on Ski Patrol at Lakeview's local ski hill, Warner Canyon.

Matt's desire to be a positive force continues even after his passing; he donated his remains to OHSU in hopes he can contribute knowledge to help others battling rare cancers.
