In the early 1960's, Mr. Scherschligt was the owner and proprietor of the Owl Gun Shop in downtown Yankton, but for most of his life he was a professional musician. He was well known in the area for his beautiful piano and organ playing and often performed at restaurants and lounges with the Alverno Combo. He was also a prolific composer and arranger. In his younger days he was an avid hunter and fisherman, but later he turned to other hobbies: collecting antiques, raising pigeons, and playing pool.
Mr. Scherschligt was a member of the Musician's Union and Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Survivors include: his wife, Dorothy, two daughters, Sharell (Bob) Rupiper of Chowchilla, CA and Leette (Lucas) Vos of Hanover Park IL; two grandchildren, Kristina Kuchta of Irene, SD, and David Rupiper of Santa Rosa, CA; four great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by four stepchildren: Sue (Joe) Hersman of Tyndall, SD, Daisy (Marv) Kamback of Yankton, Joy (Tom) Harrington of Andover, NJ and Gene (Nicki) Hollmann of Havre, MT, along with many step-grand and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Marie, three brothers: Louis, Romane, and Hubert (Boots); and his stepdaughter Sharon Bruner.
Visitations will be 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, with a rosary at 7 p.m. followed a Scripture service at 7:30 p.m. Pallbearers will be Trent Kuchta, Matt Kuchta, Wally Spencer, Dennis Schmidt, Joe Hersman, and Gene Hollman
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton, with Rev. Mark Lichter officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Yankton, SD.
