Hillary Adkins, age 60, of Winfield, passed away April 2 after an extended illness at Veteran Hospital, Johnson City, Tennessee. He was the son of the late Henry and Mary Phillips Adkins of Winfield who preceded him in death. He is survived by one son, Douglas Dale Adkins of California and four grandchildren; four brothers, Francis, Herman and Andrew of Winfield and Ada of Cincinnati, Ohio; four sisters, Mrs. Ruth Daugherty, Mrs. Zillah Davis, Mrs. Ethel Chitwood of Winfield and Mrs. Grace Terry of Oneida. Mr. Adkins enlisted in the Army at the age of 18 and served in the European Theatre, South Pacific, China, Burma and Japan in World War II. He also served in the Korean War and was Honorably discharged in the rank of Master Sergeant after a total of 24 years service. Funeral services were held Monday, April 5 at 11 a.m. from the Oneida Funeral Home with Rev. Howard Walker and Rev. J. W. Blevins officiating. Interment was in the Adkins Cemetery on Jellico Creek. Military honors and pallbearers were provided by American Legion Post NO. 138 of Oneida. Arrangements were by Oneida Funeral Home. (Source: The Scott County News, 9 Apr 1971, p2)
