Ilya Usyskin was a post-graduate student who had studied at the Moscow Technical University and the Physical-Technical Institute. He was a crewmember on the Osoaviakhim-1, a hydrogen-filled high-altitude balloon designed for scientific study. As a designer of lightweight scientific instruments for stratospheric balloons, his role was to operate the scientific instruments on board. He was killed along with the other two crew members when the Osaoviakhim-1 crashed on its maiden flight.
