John was born to William Tait and Elizabeth Xavier in Poona, Maharashtra,India. He traveled by ship with his father and Elder Hugh Finley by way of The orient, asia, Hawaii and arrived in San Fransico. Arriving in Salt Lake thru the back way. His mother, Elizabeth stayed in India to have a baby girl, Mary Ann Tait. When they were strong enough to travel she left her homeland to England, from their traveled with the saints to America and rode the Enoch train to Iowa City. Where her precious daughter died of pneumonia and was buried without her brother or father seeing her. Elizabeth carried on. Her testimony of the gospel and great love for John her only living child and husband gave her the strength to go on alone. She was assigned to the Willie handcart company and went through the trials and hardships that entailed. When they were snowed in and could go no further waiting for help they didn't know if it would come. But at General Conference Brigham Young heard of their plight and told the Saints "Go and Bring our people in" John would have been only 4 and has been said he stayed with Elder Hugh Finley while his father William Tait went to bring his wife home. When they did find them. Family tradition says Elizabeth looked from out underneath her makeshift tent and was looking for the only one that mattered, William with his red hair and beard. When he saw her he swept her into his arms and 12,000 miles traveled could not separate them. They went on to Salt Lake and had a reunion with "Little John". They said their goodbyes to the Finley brothers Alan and "Hugh who had meant so much to them. They headed South to Iron county, Utah. They had 7 more children. John never married. I wish I new more about him. The experinces he had with his parents had to of shaped his life.
