John had two wives his first was Cynthia Anne Smart, she was born in Robertson County, Tennessee in 1817. They had four children James Monroe, b Nov 1, 1837 in AR, Nancy Jane b Dec 1839 AR, David M, b 1842 AR, Rose Ann b 1844 AR.
Cynthia died during child birth of Rose Ann. Oct 23, 1844.
He married Elizabeth E. Durham in 1848 in Yell County, AR.
She was b 1835 in TN. Their children were Henrietta Elizabeth b 1849 AR, Narcissus Angeline b 1854 AR, Martha P. b 1857 Yell County, AR, Sarah Elizabeth, b 1857, Susan Christine b 1864 in Menard, TX, John Robert b 1868 Menard, TX, Josie Lenora b 1871 Menard, TX.
