DANIEL ZOOK PASSES AWAY
WELL KNOWN RESIDENT OF NAPPANEE DIES FRIDAY.
Formerly Lived in Goshen and Served as County Clerk for Four Years - Born in Elkhart County.
(From Friday's Daily News Times)
Daniel Zook of Nappanee, one of the most prominent citizens in Elkhart county, passed away this morning at 5:30, after a short illness. The immediate cause of death was heart failure, superinduced by an attack of pneumonia, contracted from exposure on election day and the day following. On Wednesday after election day Mr. Zook went to Garrett, and there exposed himself. He returned home with a severe cold which later became pneumonia. He had been better on Thursday, but heart failure caused him to sink rapidly.
Mr. Zook was a member of the firm of Coppes, Zook & Mutschler, one of the largest manufacturing institutions in Elkhart county. He was a brother of Mrs. I.J. Becknell and Attorney Aaron S. Zook of Goshen and David Zook of Evanston, Ill.
The deceased was born January 22, 1851, on a farm in Elkhart county, being the youngest son of John M. and Rebecca (Shellenberger) Zook. The father, John M. Zook, was born in Pennsylvania, moving to Ohio with his parents and settling in Elkhart county in 1862 in Clinton township, where he tilled the soil and raised his family until his death, June 6, 1872.
The early life of Daniel Zook was spent on a farm, where he learned the art of practical farming. He was educated in the schools of Clinton township and later in the Goshen public schools, and after assisting his father for some time in the latter's saw mill became a school teacher and taught school of five years. He took up the study of law at an early date with his brother, Aaron, in Goshen, and for a time practiced law in this city.
In 1882 Mr. Zook moved to Nappanee and four years later was elected clerk of the court of the county. He filled the position with credit to himself and declined a renomination at the hands of the republican party. At the expiration of his term of office Mr. Zook became associated with Coppes Bros. & Zook, by purchasing the interest of S.D. Coppes. Mr. Zook has always taken an active interest in the welfare of Nappanee and in the current topics of the day.
The deceased was married to Della Reifenberg, of Bristol, who died in 1882, at the age of 25 years, leaving a son, Harold who was born Sept. 4, 1878. Mr. Zook later married Lizzie Yarian of Nappanee, daughter of Benjamin Yarian.
The funeral will be held at Nappanee on Monday at 1:30 at the First M.E. church, Rev. Silas Cates, pastor of the church officiating. The remains may be viewed Sunday afternoon from two to four and on Monday from ten to twelve. Interment will be at the South Union cemetery, four miles northwest of Nappanee.
