Janet C. Brown, 95, of Hillsville, Va., passed on and began her new life with the Lord on July 7, 2008.
She was born June 17, 1913 in Nanticoke, Pa.
The mother of nine children; grandmother of 27; great-grandmother of 31; and great-great-grandmother of 10, Janet was an active volunteer throughout her life in numerous programs that served the needs of many. In 2000, she moved to Hillsville, Va. and was a communicant at St. Joseph Church in Woodlawn, and prior to that, she was a communicant at St. Catherine's Church in Leeds, Mass. for 27 years. At St. Catherine's, Janet served as president of the Women's Council, was a parish council member, Sunday school teacher, lector, Eucharistic Minister, and a member of the Altar Society and Choir. She was a recipient of the Pius Xth award for service to religious education at St. Catherine's Church. Janet was also involved in the Diocesan Deanery. She served as a food coordinator to Jessie's House Homeless Shelter in Northampton, Mass. Janet served as a Decisional Training Volunteer at the Hampshire County Regional Jail for more than 25 years. She resumed her volunteer work at the Bland County Correctional Center, when she moved to Hillsville, Virginia. Janet was a member of the Carroll County Senior Center in Woodlawn.
Janet loved to visit with family and friends, cook, read, watch the news and sew on her mother's Singer pedal sewing machine. She was a faithful correspondent, frequently writing to her family and friends and published a family newsletter, on her home computer, since March 2001, "News From Mother Brown".
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Rosalie Dzwileski; her husband of 57 years, John J. Brown; son, James F. Brown; daughter, Noreen Bellino; grandsons, Steven T. Donahue and John J. Brown III.
She is survived by her brother, Irven Dzwileski, of Hillsville, Va.; sons and daughters-in-law, John J. and Lorraine Brown, of Exeter, N.H.; Thomas J. Brown, of Scranton, Pa.; Martha Ann Brown, wife of James, of Jackson, N.J.; Irven Donald and Jean Brown, of South River, N.J.; daughters and sons-in-law, Alice and George Saunders, North Bridgton, Maine; Cathy H. Brown, Amesbury, Mass.; Janett and Steve Gilman, Hillsboro, N.H.; and Mary Ann and Bill Cox, of Hillsville, Va.; and her 66 grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Funeral Home in Hillsville, Va. this evening from 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Thursday July 10, 2008 at 11 a.m. with Father Charles W. Brickner as celebrant. Interment will be at the Franklin Memorial Park in North Brunswick, N.J. If friends desire to make a memorial remembrance, contributions may be made to St. Joseph's Church, 3579 Carrollton Pike, Woodlawn, VA 24381.
