In 1956, upon the death of his father-in-law, Charlie Nicholson, Norm returned to Entiat to continue the operation of the Standard Oil Bulk Plant, where he continued to work for 23 years, at which time the plant closed. He then moved to Chelan to operate the Lake Chelan Shell Service Station, before returning to the work he loved most, operating North Central Petroleum Bulk Plant in Chelan. He continued this job until his death.
Norm was an active member of the Entiat Chamber of Commerce, and served as president during the construction of Rocky Reach Dam and relocation of the City of Entiat. He was named "Entiat Citizen of the Year" in 1965. He served on the Entiat School Board for many years and he was honored to have the Entiat High School Yearbook dedicated to him in 1970. He was an avid sports fan and refereed basketball games for 25 years. He spent many hours watching his children and grandchildren participate, he was their greatest fan.
Norm enjoyed the "challenge" of golf and was a longtime member of the Lake Chelan Golf Course. He was a member of the Manson American Legion Post.
Norm valued the friendships that were made through the years with those he came to know through his business. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. His genuine kindness will be missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Edith West of Chelan; daughters Kathryn (Bob) Whitehall of Entiat and Shelley (Mike) Small of Entiat; sons Kenneth (Phyllis) West of Renton and Kevin West of Bellevue; five grandchildren; Misty (Jason) McHargue, Casey Small, Amber (Derry) Darlington, Mathew Small and Justin West; two great-grandchildren, Madison and Logan McHargue; three sisters: Evelyn Jean Kerr, Berna Dean Wayburn and Janice Mulkey; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, a granddaughter and great-granddaughter. Arrangements are by the Jones and Jones Funeral Home.
