Benjamin Higgerson (also Higgason) was born in Virginia about 1810 and died on Christmas Day, 1862, of smallpox. Family history states he contracted smallpox from a sick soldier taken into the home by his wife, Permelia (Chewning) Higgerson. Their farm was literally in the Battle of the Wilderness. There is only a stone marker to mark his grave, and some members of the Dempsey family may be buried there as well, according to H. Mercer Quann, who told that to various members of the Higgerson family when they visited him prior to his selling the farm to the National Park Service. According to family history, Benjamin was buried in a hollowed out log by slaves.
