Rachel, Mother of David Thomas

1860 Census: Rachel Thomas was born in April 1842 in Pennsylvania. She was 18 years old, married, and living in Shaws Flat in 1860.

Rachel's husband, Richard Thomas, was born about 1833 in Pennsylvania. He was a miner. The parents of both Richard and Rachel emigrated from Wales.

By 1870, the family was living in Chinese Camp and had three children, ages Clara R, age 9, William H, age 3 and Richard, age 1. It appears that the eldest child, Clara, was not enrolled in school.

By 1880, Rachel was listed as married but the head of the household. Her husband is not listed in the census. Her eldest child, Clara R., is not listed as living with her, but her other children are listed including David, who was born in about 1873, and Grace V., who was born February 23, 1876.

By 1900, Rachel was a widow and working as a housekeeper. Two of her children were still living with her, Clara and Richard. Clara and Richard were both still single, and Richard was a miner. Rachel had lost two of her five children, William in 1883 and David in 1889. Rachel passed away in 1907, and her son, Richard, passed away in 1920.

After the death of her mother, Clara moved in with her neighbors, the elderly Anna Kahl and Anna's son, Joseph Kahl, and worked for them.

By 1930, Clara was still unmarried but working as a cook at what appears to have been a home for the elderly on Mono Way in Tuolumne County.

Rachel's younger daughter, Grace V. Thomas, married George Washington Bolter about 1899, and they lived with his widowed mother, Sarah Bolter, in the Rawhide Road/Table Mountain area of Tuolumne County.

Grace's husband, George Bolter, was born August 16, 1869, and he labored on the farm and later worked as a ditch tender for Tuolumne Water Company.

Grace V. and George Bolter had a daughter, Rachel Thomas Bolter, who was born April 29, 1901.

George Bolter passed away February 20, 1943. Grace V. Thomas Bolter passed away August 10, 1963. Their daughter, Rachel, never married and passed away June 27, 1950.

Grace V. and George also had four other children who were born years after Rachel, their eldest, was born. Their other children were as follows:

1. Edith Rose Bolter was born August 27, 1910. She lived in Sonora and passed away June 26, 1987 in Tuolumne County.

2. Elsie Belle Bolter Kahl was born October 17, 1912. She married Joseph Kahl and lived in Modesto and Turlock. She passed away May 19, 1990 in Stanislaus County.

3. William David Bolter was born February 6, 1918. He lived in Oakdale and passed away April 28, 1995 in Stanislaus County.

4. Alice Gertrude Bolter Alcantar was born Jun 4, 1920. She married into the Alcantar family. She lived in Rio Linda, California, and passed away February 10, 1997.
