She was the daughter of Henry Schumacher.
On February 3, 1885 as Anna M. Schumacher, she married Johann Degen at La Salle, Illinois.
They were the parents of eight children.

Per the Globe-Gazette, Mason City, Iowa, Saturday, April 7, 1934:
Survived by three sons: Peter in Eagle Grove; John and Carl in Burlington, Wisconsin and four daughters: Mrs. Henry Keppers in Eagle Grove; Mrs. John Dietrich, St. Joseph, Missouri; Mrs. F.H. McDonald, Los Angeles, California and Elizabeth Degen in San Francisco, California.
