Dr. O. T. Scamahorn, well-known Pittsboro physician, died, April 29, in the Memorial Clinic, Indianapolis, following several months illness. He was 80 years old.
A country doctor who delivered more that 4200 babies, he set up practice in Pittsboro in 1908. He was a member of the first graduating class of the Indiana University School of Medicine that same year.
Before becoming a doctor he was employed as an embalmer's assistant while he was attending Louisville, Ky., Medical College. He also taught school and was a former livery stable hand. During his 56 year medical career, he was credited with delivering more babies than any other physician in Central Indiana.
He was names "Indiana Physician of the Year" in 1956 by his colleagues. Two years later he was honored by the residents of Pittsboro for 50 years of service to the community in which he resided.
His son, Malcolm O. Scamahorn, joined him in practice following World War II. His other son, Dr. Milbern Scamahorn, is a leading optometrist in Kokomo.
He was a member of the Pittsboro Christian Church of which he served as board chairman and taught a Sunday School Class for over 50 years. He was also a 50-year member of the Pittsboro Masonic Lodge, a member of the Eastern Star, Scottish Rite, Shrine, Lions Club, Farm Bureau, Grange and numerous medical societies. He was admitted to the bar in 1936 but never practiced.
He had served Hendricks County as coroner, county health officer, member of the County Fair Board and was chairman of the Pittsboro Town Board for more than 20 years.
Services were Saturday morning in the Pittsboro Christian Church with Gregory Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements. Burial was in the Knights of Pythias Cemetery in Lizton.
Surviving with the sons, are the widow, Mae Scamahorn; four grandchildren, Jean Ann, John and James Scamahorn, all of Pittsboro, and Gayle Scamahorn, of Kokomo; a brother, Nathan Scamahorn, of Jeffersonville; and a sister, Mrs. Delia Scott, of Lizton.
