Thomas Brumme was 94 years old yesterday, September 4. He is the father of Mrs. W. P. Hearty of 716 West Second Street and with whom he lives. Mr Brumme is a small man with gray hair and whiskers and a back curved with age. His eyesight is poor now, though a year ago he could read, and he walks with a cane. He spends the day in talking with his daughter or some German or French friends, and in smoking. He can't talk English. He was born near Frankfort on the Rhine and was the eldest of five children and is the only survivor. His wife died July 8, 1855. Mr. Brumme came to the United States in 1849 and five years later to Iowa. He lived many years in the country north of Des Moines and was recognized as authority on history and matters of political character. He had nine children, but only two, Mrs. Hearty and Mrs. Brumme, are living. There are ten grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren living. Mr Brumme when 11 years old saw Napoleon. He is a Frenchman to the core and takes delight in discussing the political phases of his native country.

Mr. Thomas Brumm, one, if not the oldest, man in Polk County died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W.P. Hearty at 2:30 a.m. the morning of December 21, 1895. He has been in poor health for the past six months and for a week past has been seriously ill.
Mr. Brumm was born at Frankfort on the Rhine, September 4, 1800. He came to America in 1849. From Milwaukee he moved to a farm near Ankeny, Polk Co. in 1854. A year later his wife died and in 1878 he came to live in Des Moines with Mr. & Mrs. Hearty. He leaves one other daughter, Mrs. Brumm of Iowa City. Besides these there are 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren to mourn his death. He outlives all but Mrs. Hearty and Mrs. Brumm of his 9 children. Of recent years his birth anniversaries were quietly celebrated at the Hearty home. The funeral will be held from the Hearty home at 716 Second St. this afternoon at 2:30.
