Daughter of Francis Franklin (Frank) and Sarah Ann Griffin Westmoreland . She was a widow and had six children to raise after Larey died Mattie lost their home that they owned and it was auction off on the court house steps and she moved to 128 Academy Steet in Old Salem in Winston-Salem Forsyth County North Carolina with her six children the oldest being 19 years old and the youngest child being only five months and nine day's old and that was where she was living at the time of her death at 75 years of age. I remember going to visit her in old salem and she made the best homade biscuits in her double oven wood stove (one on the bottom and one on top) in the world and she always had some left over and she would put them in the top oven and the first thing me and my brother would do is to go to the kitchen and get a biscuit and walk across the street and get a cup of crushed ice (free) and then walk up the street to old salem and get a freshly made glaced donut(free)from the first orignal krispy kreme donut shop.We thought we were BIG TIME although all of us were living as poor of the poorest at that time.
The house she lived in at 128 Academy Street was an old two story house that was dimley lit and had a walk around front porch with bannisters. I was really scared to go to the bath room because it was located off of the back porch and she always kept her false teeth in there in a glass of water. As a child it was really spooky.
Mattie always wore a apron with pockets and she loved to chew tobacco she would carry a plug of tobacco and a pocket knife in the pockets the knife was used to cut off a piece of the plug tobacco.
