James father, Joseph and 3 of his sisters died in December of 1854 in Lime Creek Township, Washington County, Iowa.
James being the oldest of the remaining 3 children helped his mother, at one time owning and operating a boarding house.
On 28 April 1861 in Abingdon Illinois he married Susan Dolph, daughter of Anson and Harriett (Darling) Dolph (Snyder). Together, he and Susan had 5 children. One of their daughters, Hattie, died in Lime Creek and is buried in the Taylor Cemetery with her grandfather and 3 aunts.
James served in the War of the States with the I 22 Iowa Infantry. He was in Battles of Port Isibron, Champion Hills, Charge at Black River, Assault on Vicksburg, Siege of Vicksburg. He became ill with scurvy, asthma and dropsy at Vicksburg.
James, his wife Susan and their 4 children, James Eugene Jr., Eva and Rose and Charles,along with his mother Almira, came to Johnson county Nebraska in 1884.
