Son of Eliakim Anderson & Amy W. King Anderson.
Mr. Anderson was born near Morristown, New Jersey, on the 26th day of February, 1824. He resided with his father on the farm until his seventeenth year, when he left for Wisconsin, where he worked at mining lead for two years. At the end of that time, he came to this city, where he has remained ever since. At the time of his coming here, an elder brother, Nathaniel Anderson, was engaged in the Carpentering business in this section of the country, and of him he learned the trade. On the 22nd of April, 1848, he married Miss Rachel Knowling and on the 4th of December, 1857, she died leaving two motherless daughters, both well-known in this city, one of whom being the wife of our well-known citizen N. R. Ziegler, and the other being Mrs. Leland Curkendall, of Dayton, Ohio. On the 23rd of September, 1858, Mr. Anderson married Mrs. Lucy Gates, who still survives him as does the three children which have been born to them. All of the children reside in this city and are, Messrs. Horace M. and Geo. K. Anderson and Miss Nellie M. Anderson. Mr. Anderson's father and also a brother reside in Michigan, near Fremont, Ind. One brother lives near Grange, Lynn County, Kansas and another is a resident of Chicago. His only sister lives near Geneseo, and is the wife of Wm. Saunders a well known resident of that locality. Although a man of unassuming habits, choosing the enjoyments of home life to those of a more public nature, yet the people have on different occasions shown their appreciation of his many sterling qualities by electing him to positions of trust and honor. For a number of years he acted in the position of Chief of the Fire Department of Moline, and in that position he made many friends. For a number of years past he has been master builder for the Plow Company, and in a number of different states in this country, stands buildings erected by that company under his supervision. At 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon will occur the funeral at the family residence on Fourth avenue between Fourteenth and Fifteenth streets, the Rev. Moses Hull of Maquoketa, Iowa, officiating; and at that time the friends of the deceased will gaze for the last time upon all that remains on earth, of a man who has been closely identified with the early history of Moline --a man who was respected by everybody and loved by all of his closer acquaintances.
