He was born to Jacob and Phillipina (Gilcher) Wendel. In 1919, he married Anna Linn, who survived him.

Also surviving are three sons, Lisle, St. Marys, and Carl and Wayne, both Celina; two daughters, Esta (Herbert) Bollenbacher, Rockford, and Dorothy (Alfred) Borger, Celina; a sister, Emma Baucher, Celina; 21 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services were at St. Paul's United Church of Christ.
