He was born September 6, 1928 in Galesburg, the son of Vance W. and Frances Mae Dowd Sturgeon. He married Mary Lawrence. He later married Frances Mae Ring in Oquawka on August 12, 1972. She preceded him in death on December 11, 2006.
He is survived by 2 sons, Mike (and Elaine) Sturgeon and Dave (and Rhonda) Sturgeon, both of Galesburg, 2 step sons, Dave (and Becky) Ryner and Gary (and Chris) Ryner, both of Galesburg, 2 step daughters, Debbie Green of Dixon, IL and Lori (and Mike) Landon of Galesburg, a sister, Rosemarie (and Harold) Johnson of Galesburg, 8 grandchildren, including, Josh Sturgeon and Kyle Sturgeon, both of Galesburg, 9 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his twin sister.
Richard was the branch manager of Clean Towel Service. He later was a security guard at the former Gale Products Division of Outboard Marine Corporation in Galesburg and then at the Harris Casino in Memphis, TN.
He coached and umpired many local sports. He loved horses and trail riding and was the Captain of the Sheriff's Posse. Richard was also an avid Chicago Cubs fan.
He served in the United States Army from 1946 to 1948 and was stationed in Japan.
Funeral will be 11 AM Friday, June 27, 2008 in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Mrs. Eleanor Landon will officiate. Visitation will be 10 to 11 AM Friday at the chapel. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to the Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285 Baseball Team.
