Charles was the first child of Charles Buckland Sr and Eliza Fitzgerald Buckland. He was born in Sydney Australia and travelled to Surrey England as a child before emigrating with his family to Manhattan in 1852.
He enlisted in the Zouaves,served honorably, surviving the Battle of Antietam (among others)without a scratch only to die in the aforementioned Riot. He left a wife, Mary Wenman Buckland who gave birth to his only child Racella a short time later.
