Bernard H. Klunenberg was born March 12, 1857 at Oldenburg, Germany.
His wife, Bernadine, also a native of Oldenburg, was born November 10, 1853.
They were married in Oldenburg, Germany in 1878 and came to America with
his sister and her husband, who settled in St. Joseph, Missouri. Bernard and
Bernadine settled on a farm near Arcadia, Iowa. All their seven children: Anna,
Henry, Agnes, Joseph, John, Ben and Cecelia, were born there. In 1892, they
purchased land east of Ashton and moved to the farm which later became
known as the Joe Klunenberg farm. They lived there for ten years before
purchasing the farm that is now owned by Edward Thole. Mrs. Thole is a
granddaughter of the Klingenberg's. In 1920, Bernard and Bernadine retired
from farming and built a home in Ashton. They celebrated their Golden
Anniversary in the fall of 1928. Bernard died April 2, 1931 and Bernadine
passed away February 21, 1936.
