Born in Farmville, Virginia to Joseph E. and Mary Dunnington Venable. Husband of Mary Lamar Patterson. Attended VMI, class of 1967. Served as a private in Co. D of the Corps of Cadets. Took part in the Battle of New Market and continued to serve with the Corps of Cadets until Richmond was evacuated. After the war, he moved to Petersburg. There, he was a tobacconist, conducted an insurance business in 1916, served as vice-president of the National Bank of Petersburg, and in 1928 he was a director of that Bank. He died at his home at 403 W. Washington Street.
