He was one of 13 children born to Samuel Leatherwood Burns, a wealthy landowner in Wayne County, Tennessee.The Civil War cost the Burns family most of their wealth, since they lost all their slaves and most of their horses. After the estate was divided among all the children, no one was in the wealthy catagory.
