According to legend, Abraham Lincoln stayed at the Brandenburg tavern when he was passing through Henry County as a young surveyor.

The Brandenburg Inn, built in 1837, and though they called it a tavern it was said by Miss Sawyer, a granddaughter of Mrs Phoebe Brandenburg that George Brandenburg's second wife, Phoebe, never allowed any to be sold there.
George Brandenburg, a carpenter born in Maryland in 1799, came to the the area on September 9, 1835. He moved his family into a log house on Christmas of that year and immediately opened it to the public as a tavern. He soon built another cabin by the side of the first and left space for a hall between, possibly for saddles and saddlebags (also called a dog trot), and covered the whole with one roof. A supply of beds, bedding, benches, and other luxuries for weary travelers were also added.
In 1836 Brandenburg secured the services of Mark Aiken and laid out the town of Dayton. For a while it was known as Brandenburg's Settlement.
