Josiah H. Collins was born 30 May 1814 in Walcottville, Wayne County, NY. He came to Washtenaw County with his parents at age 16. He planted the first orchard in Lyndon Township in the summer of 1837. He held several town offices and assisted in many improvements to the county.

He married Mary Brown on 24 Dec 1835 in Pittsfield, Washtenaw County, MI. Josiah recalled the date, and added that it was "Christmas Eve," in a history that was later published, which shows the sentimentality of his remembrance of the event. On New Year's Day 1836 they took residence in their first family home, which was a log cabin.

They were members of the M.E. Church. Four of Josiah's brothers were Methodist Episcopal ministers.

Josiah died 7 Mar 1888 in Lyndon Twp, MI, age 73, of paralysis.

The known children are recorded on the family headstone as:

Henry M., 1837 - 24 Mar 1855.
Charles E., 13 Oct 1839 - 10 May 1925.
Mary Elizabeth, 18 Feb 1843 - c. 1928.
Josiah, 1852 - 1854.
William B., 1 Jul 1853 - 18 Jan 1931.

In a published account of his life Josiah said that he and Mary were the parents of 12 children, another account said 11. In the Collins Family Cemetery there is a headstone that memorializes "The Children of Josiah and Mary." There are spaces or sections on this stone for three children, but there is no readable information on these spots, and it seems to me that nothing was ever inscribed there.
