His widow, Barbara Ann Axe, claimed a pension for herself and their only child, Mary Elizabeth, born July 15, 1863. According to the Widow's pension file, John died of wounds & typhoid fever. The "U.S. Registers of Death of Volunteers 186-1865" lists his cause of death as typhoid fever while at Camp Joe Holt/Jefferson Civil War Hospital. His widow remarried in 1877 to Benjamin F Roler. When he died in 1893, Barbara's pension was restored. Mary Elizabeth died at age 18.
