The son of Dea. Simeon & Sally (Lincoln) Whitcomb, he completed a course at Gilmanton Theological Seminary in 1847 and afterwards studied for two years at Andover Theological Seminary. He was pastor of Congregational churches in Stoneham, Southbridge, North Carver and Lynnfield Center, Massachussets.
On July 5, 1862 he received a commission as Chaplain of the U.S. Hospital at New Bern, N.C. and served there and other hospitals in that area. He got malarial fever, then acute bronchitis, and died at Morehead City, N.C. at the age of 44.
He was married to Harriet Lincoln Wheeler of Concord on May 1, 1852. They were the parents of: Eva (1853), twins Mary and Maria (born & died 1855), Lizzie (1856), Albert (1858), Mira (born & died 1860), Nellie (1861) & John (1865).
